Meet Lauren and update on the broken leg 4 weeks on...

Four weeks on from my accident at Borde Hill! It's remarkable how quickly the last four weeks have gone - I think it's because I have still been down the yard trying to help everyday! I've been giving plenty of instructions from my chair!!

I have hired new help meet Lauren Mclusky!

Lauren and Dusky Pink

You might already know Lauren from being a local rider, member of Eridge Pony Club or even being a groom for Francis Whittington and Pippa Funnell.

Lauren competed her own horse Dusty Pink up CIC**.  Lauren comes over 3-4 times a week to ride my beasts and to compete them. Lauren took Ollie "Cullawn Warrior", Bea "Galwaybay Timberlina" and Poppy "Popstar III" to Golden Cross for their first competition together.

Poppy and Bea were in the 95 and 1m class Ollie in the 1.05 and 1.10. Poppy had two down in both classes just feeling her feet first time on grass I think. Bea was 4th double clear and also WON the 1m class.

Ollie was testing if Lauren was awake on top by having a naughty run out at number 2 in the 1.05. Mum seems to have a sixth sense with the horses and told Lauren don't trust him! How right was she! She always tells me at shows "he looks naughty today Lis" - thanks mum he then goes and bucks me off in the warm up!!

Butter wouldn't melt - cheeky Ollie!  Still looking super smart and handsome in his Jeffries bridle.  I think he's forgiven!!

After the run out he flew around with Lauren being a back seat passenger!

In the 1.10cm Lauren rode a lot more positive and jumped a lovely clear. Jump off was next, Lauren was starting to get more competitive jumping a super quick round against the clock winning the class!

Ollie - not a fan of flapping ribbons!

My ride for the day was a bit stubborn by not moving, but released at the end of the day I didn't take the hand brake off (blonde moment) wouldn't have that trouble riding a horse! Walking around on crutches all day is not fun!

Old Silver - a little stubborn to load and takes 2 handlers!

My leg is feeling a lot better not as swollen, I went back to the hospital to have a check up, as you can see here this is my new leg

I've got a rod  going through my bone with four pins holding it together the doc said I can start walking with out my crutches, I think I will try one at a time first!

My aim is to ride at the Backinaction Prelim Championships at Addington Manor on 10th August with Popstar  in 7 weeks.

Thank you to my team of hard workers to keep the Pilbeam yard and horses going! I've got a lot of paying back when I'm fixed!

Dramas at Borde Hill!!!!

Back from my holiday on the Wednesday I had three days to prepare four ponies and myself and the rest of the horses to exercise.  While I was away my lovely friends Lauren McLusky and Katherine Sands were able to exercise them and keep them on their toes ready for me to hop straight back on, and my Mum, Mel and Kirsty kept the yard going.

I needed to take Bea, Connie and Holly XC on Friday for a tune up, there doesn't seem enough hours in the day, really wanted to pop up to Littleton Manor, but its not quite a pop up the road for us and it was a Friday - M25 don't think so!!  I decided on Bedgebury Park I’ve not been there to use the refurbished XC so a change for the horses too! They all went really will especially Holly she felt on top form.

Sunday

First day I was on board Connie (Aquilla), Bea (Galwaybay Timberlina) and Ollie (Cullawn Warrior).

This was Bea and Connie's first ODE, Connie started the day off scoring a 32.5 dressage which was really good as he has never been in a dressage ring and he stroke off on the wrong canter lead, giving us a 4 but apart from that 7s and 8s (clever pony). Showjumping he did a super clear XC was all to play for next. I was hearing over the tannoy people were having problems at 5ab a skinny to a corner, when I walked it, it rode a nice straightforward 3 strides, and we will just kick on with our little feet! This was Connie's 4th time going over XC fences but we had no problems he did a super clear just adding 3.2 time ending up on a score of 35 coming 3rd at his first BE event!! Connie will be for sale I really recommend him, he will be a super pony for someone, I would love to have him myself!

Connie

Bea Bea! Been so excited about taking her, she is one to look out for the future. Dressage is Bea's weakest phase at the moment but we are getting there, she scored a respectful 32 very pleased. Show jumping felt easy to her popping around clear and probably remembering all of her jumping at Weston Lawns! XC wasn't sure what to expect she still felt a little green XC schooling in the week and wasn't sure about the water still, she didn't even bat a eye lid at the water she gave me a great ride just picking up 3 time faults end result she came 7th and I was really looking forward to the next events (well was!).

 Bea

Ollie my main man! He must have given them a pet talk in the box on the way over!!! Ollie just comes out for some fun at BE100 level showing that he is a very consistent horse we had a 29 dressage and went double clear. He was feeling very full of himself though I think it was the red cell I've been pumping into him. If you have a horse which feels low and a bit lethargic definitely use Red Cell or Proplus I don't tend use supplements but theirs I recommend. Ollie came 4th finishing on 34. All the Ponies came home with ribbons happy rider, happy owners and happy horses!

Ollie!  Thanks to MDR Photo and Julian Portch for taking fab photos of all the horses.

Monday

Holly's turn to shine!  Started of a miserable wet day couldn't believe how much the weather changed from Sunday being lovely and hot to a wet mud bath Monday!

Dressage: didn't need to put any hoof oil on, her hooves and legs were plastered in mud the time we got to the warm up area! Holly warmed up well. She was either going to go awful in the mud or fab. She was fab scoring a impressive 26 taking us in the lead.

The show jumping was causing a few problems with the ground being very soft. The warm up was like warming up in a mud bath. We went ahead and jumped a super clear she really tried her heart out for me.

XC was next people were withdrawing; the mud didn't scare me and Holly off. Wasn't worried about getting around in the time, was just aiming for a double clear and to look after my pony. Everything was going so well until number 14b the evil duck.

Holly going so well and felt on top form before the....

The duck!!!  I hit my leg on overhang of the duck's head.  This photo is taken from the great Shoestring Eventing website which has lots of course photos on which is a great helpful directory for riders.

Holly jumped into the water no problem 4 strides to this duuuuccccckkk! Bang there goes my leg on the back of the duck’s head. I released My leg was broken straight away never been in so much pain (even compared to childbirth!), at this point I was more worried about how I was going to get off Holly. I was hanging onto Holly and trying to hold my leg, it felt like my leg was going to fall off!!!

They put a split onto my leg and carried me off into a car. I was so glad I was on Holly, I don't think Ollie would of been as patient! Got into the ambulance where they tried to give me morphine, they couldn't understand why it wasn't going into my arm because they had put the needle in my tissue and not my vein! At this point I was in a lot of pain, but when it started working it was bliss!

They wanted to cut my lovely Mountain Horse Competition Boots off, there was no way I was letting them, my boot came off easy with the zip at the back.  I was also very pleased that I was wearing my Rugged Breeches on Sunday and had an old pair of jods on as they got cut off!!

They had to lift me into another ambulance to take me to Brighton Hospital, my mum followed us, Dad and Kirsty took Holly back and did the horses back home.

Shane Carter and Edie had the two babies Oscar and Rambo and took them home for me – they were fab and so kind helping out in circumstances you hope you never find yourself in.

Got to Hospital and waiting for me were Consultants and Doctors I felt like the Queen with all the attention!

I was sedated to have my leg pulled back where it should be and plastered! They warned me before I was sedated I would sleep talk, apparently I was talking about Jägerbombs 1..2...3..jägerbombs might of been when I went out with the girls on the Friday night?!

I woke up to find my mum standing there and my leg in plaster over my knee. I finally got moved to a ward at midnight. Next day I was second on the list for my op. A consultant came around to tell me what their plans were, I could have had a cage (which I really didn't want) or a rod down my bone and pins, they also said if my leg is so swollen they will cut two either side of my leg to let the air out then I might have skin crafts, I suppose they have to say the worse case.

Never been under anesthetic before so was quit scared everything ended up ok just had the rod and pins in my leg.

Had the physio the next day to help me get up on my feet on crutches, I thought it would be easy being on crutches - when I've been drunk messing around I’d had no problems so I'm sure I can walk with them sober! Well I stood up and come over all dizzy and felt sick, my body wasn't used to standing, had to sit down for a bit, I was so determined to walk I couldn't every time I got up I felt sick. So frustrating!

Next day Wednesday was a lot better I was up on my feet walked to the toilet for the first time in 3 days, started my exercises, they said I could go home on Thursday if I passed the stair test!

Thursday came and I passed my stair test they made me walk down a whole staircase and up!

Went home Thursday afternoon Kat and mum picked me up it was so nice to be out in the fresh air again! I've been living with Mum and Dad so Mum can look after Oscar, while James goes to work. If it wasn't for my mum I don't know how I would cope, she has been looking after Oscar all the horses even been riding Ollie and Holly for me, washing, cooking dinner I could go on! She’s been amazing and I’m so lucky having such a supportive family and friends.

My leg after about 2 weeks!

Also big thank you to Kirsty, Mel and Kat for keeping the yard running, Lauren for riding the horse keeping them going until I'm back on board!

Since I've been out I have been going down the yard everyday watching Lauren ride helping her putting jumps up! My friend Anna’s Dad was kind enough to lend me his mobility scooter. You’ll be finding me at shows cruising on my mobility scooter!!
